Bike Touring on a Banana Bike with Mom
August 15, 2019
When I was 9 years old, my mom and I rode from our inland home to the coast of Maine on our bikes - her's an ancient Schwinn 3-speed, and mine a pink girl's bike with a banana seat and handlebar streamers. What would be an afternoon affair today on light road bikes was a several day affair for us. Read on to find out our unique strategy for places to stay for the night - one that is rather unbelievable today. This article appeared in the Adventure Cycling Association's online story blog in August 2019, and is part of an upcoming memoir in the form of a collection of stories, essays and poetry, about growing up poor in rural Maine with a remarkable mother whose serious mental illness was a source of great challenges, but also great creativity, ingenuity and, of course, interesting stories.
Nostalgia

But a trip back to Maine for my sister's memorial found me seeing Maine, and my relationship with my sister, in a whole new light. This essay was a runner up in the 3rd Quarter 2018 Women on Writing Creative Nonfiction Essay Contest.

April in Arizona Coloradoan Article
A Coloradoan newspaper article about a mother-daughter backpacking trip that I took with a good friend and our 7 year old daughters in the Superstition Wilderness near Phoenix, Arizona. As we hiked through the blooming desert we also watched our young daughters bloom as they found their place in the wilderness.
